      A Conversation with Tony Ward

      2026-05-12

Before the flashbulbs, the premieres, and the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals, Cannes already begins shaping the fashion conversation of the season. More than a film festival, the Cannes Film Festival has become a global Couture moment where cinema, fashion, jewelry, and celebrity image all collide on one red carpet.

Ahead of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Tony Ward shares his thoughts on the evolution of Cannes style, the silhouettes defining the season, and what truly creates an unforgettable fashion moment on the montée des marches.

Why does Cannes remain such an important moment for couture houses and designers?

“Cannes has become a platform. In many ways, it feels like another Fashion Week,” says Tony Ward. “It’s where cinematic talent highlights couture gowns, jewelry, and red-carpet fashion on an international level.”

For the designer, Cannes now carries a unique importance within the fashion house, one that rivals traditional award seasons.

“In my opinion, it has become as important, if not even more important, than the Award Season in Los Angeles. There is more finesse to it, and a much stronger connection to cinema. It’s also very international. It’s not only American or only French. It brings together completely different worlds.”

    • What inspires you most when preparing looks for Cannes?

For Tony, designing for Cannes always starts with the personality behind the gown.

“The inspiration often comes from the history of the celebrity herself,” he explains. “How she wants to evolve, surprise people, or push herself into something new.”

Rather than imposing a single vision, the process becomes highly personal. Each Tony Ward couture gown is developed around the identity, attitude, and energy of the woman wearing it.

“It’s very connected to each celebrity individually. The relationship between the dress and the woman has to feel natural, genuine.”

What silhouettes or forms of elegance do you think will define Cannes this year?

This season, Tony Ward predicts a move toward cleaner and sharper silhouettes.

“I think we’re going in a direction that is more body-conscious,” he says. “Very fitted shapes, fit-and-flare silhouettes, something pure and solid.”

While glamour remains central to Cannes red carpet fashion, Tony believes the approach is becoming more refined and less overloaded.

“We are seeing elegance in a more stripped-back way. Less ‘cliché, less excess, but still incredibly dressed-up. Cannes is still Cannes. Women want to feel unforgettable for that moment.”

    • What makes a Cannes fashion moment truly unforgettable in your eyes?

For Tony Ward, the magic of Cannes cannot be reduced to a dress alone. The most memorable moments happen when every detail aligns perfectly.

“It’s the combination of everything,” he says. “The event, the personality wearing the gown, the color, the timing, the weather, even the photographer and the shot he takes.”

And sometimes, the result becomes impossible to predict.

“When everything comes together, there is this momentum where you suddenly say: wow… I would have never imagined it this way.”

Beyond the red carpet itself, Cannes continues to influence the wider fashion conversation of the season. The silhouettes, fabrics, and styling choices unveiled on the Croisette shape editorial shoots, Couture requests, and even future runway directions. For designers, it is one of the rare moments where fashion is experienced live, emotionally, and instantly across the world.

That unpredictability is exactly what continues to make the Cannes Film Festival one of fashion’s most fascinating stages… where Couture stops being a garment and starts becoming a piece of cinematic history.
